I am starting a brand new retro league starting with the 1972-73 season and including both the NHL and WHA.

Just a quick update - we've had a couple of sign ups but still have several openings available.

5 Openings left in both the NHL (Seals, Kings, North Stars, Blues & Canucks) and the WHA (Oilers, Crusaders, Fighting Saints, Nationals, Blazers)

Note that you're not tied to your team's actual history - so the Seals won't necessarily fold, the North Stars don't have to move to Dallas, etc. We're going to craft our own history and the WHA teams that make the merge are definitely not set in stone.

We're going to launch the league next week so I am taking this opportunity to make one final push for new recruits as we still have several open teams.

Two NHL teams are available: The Golden Seals & North Stars and five WHA teams are open: Alberta Oilers, Cleveland Crusaders, Minnesota Fighting Saints, Ottawa Nationals and Philadelphia Blazers.

We are not tied to actual history - taking the Seals or one of the WHA teams does not mean your team will go away as it did historically. The GM's ability to run the team successfully will ultimately drive the fate of the franchise and GMs will also be able to move their teams.

North Stars have been claimed. One NHL team still open (California) and five WHA teams (see above). WHA teams get first crack at free agents, starting likely on Wednesday so time's running out to get in while you can have the most say in building your team.

Still hoping to get a full slate of GMs to fill out the WHA. The WHA teams will get first crack at Gordie & his sons this coming offseason, plus first crack at Europeans, etc. and with the open-ended format of the league, the GM will make the team's destiny, it's not tied to history. There's no real reason a well-managed LA Sharks team can't make it to the eventual merger (which may or may not occur when it did historically).
