I'm curious why it got its own new stat. What makes it different than a player's normal SC skill?

Reason for it is simple.

Penalty shot Skill does not equal scoring ability in a game. That skill DOES NOT NECESSARILLY transfer over to a shootout. Proof:

For great shootout specialists but not necessarilly elite goal scorers, see Petteri Numelin (8/10), Jussi Jokinen (26/48), Frans Nielsen (9/15), Wojtek Wolski (18/34).

For elite scorers struggling when it comes down to the skill contest, see Alex Ovechkin (12/43), Vincent Lecavalier (12/41), Dany Heatley (4/24), Marty St. Louis (5/23), Marian Gaborik (2/18), Jeff Carter (3/17).

Pretty impressive no?

Question for you... without the PS stat, how do you rate Dany Heatley or Marian Gaborik considering SC will affect the Penalty Shot if there is no PS stat, and that they are both leaders or close to it in goals in the NHL?

Hence the need for a PS Stat!
